From Our President

November 2018

I feel honored to be the current President of the Maine State Florists and Growers Association. Our organization is now 78 years strong and that wouldn't have happened without the dedication and hard work of our board members and leaders. I'm lucky to have this opportunity to represent our members and to work to make MSFGA stronger and more relevant than ever.

We are small, but proud, and rightfully so. MSFGA strives to bring education, knowledge and positive change to our industry statewide (at nine solid driving hours north to south this is no small task!). Annually, we offer the Professional Certified Florist program as a way to bring entry level designers and shop staff up to speed about the industry. Our Maine Master Floral Designer program has graduated dozens of designers over the years and is a recognized path to AIFD (American Institute of Floral Designers). We host trade fairs and shows and conventions that bring local, regional, and national talent to the stage. By bringing florists and growers together for education and opportunity, we hope to build a stronger industry.

In my tenure, I hope to focus our energy on bringing in more members and celebrating the diversity that is growing in our industry. We are not all brick and mortar flower shops or nurseries these days. We are freelancers and flower growers too. Fueled by passion for design and a willingness to help each other grow, MSFGA hopes to bring our industry together so that we all can be the very best at what we do.

As a 20+ year veteran of the floral industry, I believe that the only constants are buckets & change. And, I think that you’ll see this industry wide. Certainly the industry is changing here in Maine. I know my business, Fairwinds Florist, looks very different than it did 15 years ago.

MSFGA is changing too. Last June we began a Strategic Planning Process that seeks to grow and strengthen our membership. Of course that means I want to hear from you. Reach out if you'd like. Let's chat at an upcoming show, or give me a call or email with your thoughts about how we might achieve our goal of better serving our membership. Or better yet, get involved with our Strategic Planning Process and weigh in. Help us make the changes you want to see. With your help, we hope to continue to help our member florists, growers, designers, and supporters through strong networks and education.

Thank you!
